For the record, I'm officially on the Sharapova bandwagon now. (I'd really thought this was Wozniacki's time to finally capture a Slam. Clearly, I was wrong. Props to Clijsters, who I also greatly admire, for keeping Woz on the defensive and out-of-rhythm; seemed Caroline could never get into a solid groove. But what is with Clijsters' new hairstyle?! Sorry, I digress.) I wouldn't have expected Maria to sustain such intensity and focus this early in the season. It's just like the old days! Can she keep it up, especially in the next round against Kvitova, whose star has risen so fast this past year or so? Who knows. But it will be fun watching.
Now is that match today ... or tomorrow? I can't remember.
Speaking of respective rankings, did you read that Petra Kvitova's boyfriend is playing in the juniors? While their ages may not be that different, what a weird thing. Who's your girlfriend? "Oh, the women's #1 seed." Where's your boyfriend? "Oh, he's over there playing in the juniors." ;-)
ReplyDeleteAnd since Dave was speaking of Maria's snappy comebacks, did you see (or hear about) her post-match press conference zinger? They asked her if she'd heard that Aggie Radwanska was complaining about Sharapova's shrieking, and Maria's response was, "Isn't she back in Poland now?" Ouch! Remind me not to get into a war of words with Ms. Sharapova.
And, finally, I saw a Tweet about last night's match that read: 'Pova ova 'Rova. Cute.
Love that Radwanska retort. SNAP!
ReplyDeleteNever known Maria to play mixed doubles. Then again, Hingis was never much for that either. However, Hingis IS playing legends mixed with Pat Cash. Or was. I think they lost to Navratilova and whomever her partner is.
