New No. 1

Posted by BESS: Well, let's not bury the lead. Ladies and gentleman, your new No. 1 men's tennis player is Novak Djokovic. (Dave cheers. Bess boos.)

He's had a phenomenal year, with a 47-1 record and counting. And despite the fact that Rafa has won 5 of the past 6 major titles, Djoker's got more points, and he's now No. 1. Congrats, Nole. I didn't even hate your reaction on court after winning today's match to send you over the top.

Djokovic and Tsonga played a really fun semi-final. There were multiple points where one or both of them were left sprawled flat out on the ground. Such effort! And such fun. I love it when both players seem to be truly enjoying each other and the match.

Both showed why they're winners. Djokovic was just more consistently tough throughout the match, and he deserved to win. He's also played his way into his first Wimbledon final, so he's got to be thrilled. Will he take on Andy Murray or Rafa? That remains to be seen... they're up next!

  1. What a glorious day! So excited! It was, indeed, a great match. And I'd like to note how gracious Novak was in victory, giving Tsonga a full hug (not just a courtesy pat on the back) at net and after his victory. Very classy.

  2. For me, the more gracious part of Novak's victory was that he didn't pound his heart with over-the-top bravado. He seemed truly just... thrilled.
