Worth your time

Posted by BESS: A few post-Wimbledonisms...
  • I always enjoy Jon Wertheim's "50 Thoughts" columns after each major. Here's his "50 Thoughts from Wimbledon." Two things really stuck out to me. First the link to a Tennis Channel piece on a farmer in Charles City, Iowa, who's built his own grass tennis court. Second, Nadal's writing an autobiography? Can I preorder it NOW? w000t!
  • NBC compiled the Top 10 Shots of the tournament. This is especially a must-watch for those of you who don't really get why Dave and I love this sport so much. Entertaining stuff! #7 is a personal favorite--crazy reflexes for someone that age.
On a related note, I think everyone else has forgotten about tennis but me...

  1. Bess, props to you for blogging your tennis-crazed heart out over the 4th of July holiday weekend. Sorry I wasn't able to contribute much. Even more sorry that I wasn't able to watch much of either final match. (Ugh.) Oh, well, on to the US Open Series, right?

  2. Five thoughts on Wertheim's 50: (1) very nice that he gave a farewell nod to Enberg, (2) surprised he went so easy on Evert, (3) thought he nailed it perfectly re: Nadal, (4) thought he nailed it perfectly AGAIN re: the Williams sisters, and (5) enough about the grunting already! Some male players grunt loudly, too, and I'm tired of the double standard. Sure, I don't know of any men who "shriek" like the women but, whatever. Why are we trying to teach girls to be silent, proper little ladies on court, rather than competitive athletes? Did we not learn anything from the trail that Billie Jean King blazed so many years ago? Seriously, people. Let the women play. And hit killer shots. And run and sweat and get physical on court. And, if it suits their style of play, grunt and even shriek. (Sidenote: Have YOU ever tried to return a serve or shot made by a pro tennis player? I haven't, but I'm assuming it requires every ounce of energy and power a person can muster, which, in the case of a person with a slight frame, might also require well-timed and forceful breathing.) Female tennis players are athletes, for God's sake; stop b*tching about something so petty and let them compete.

  3. One more thing. I truly hope Bess will agree to road trip with me to Charles City, so that we can play a set or two against one another on Mark Kuhn's "All-Iowa Club" grass court. I'll even let her grunt and shriek all she wants.

  4. The top 10 shots is no longer available - copyright infringement claims.

Let women play tennis. Well said, Dave.

I'm waiting for this blog to light up again during the US Open. Thanks you two.

  5. Vernon, thanks much. We may (disclaimer: I say "may" because I hate to promise anything, at least from my end, as I'm in the middle of a long-distance move back to Iowa) keep this alive during the U S Open Series, the string of American hard court tournaments leading up to the actual U S Open. Stay tuned.
